A regular daily Independent Reading Time for students is a way to strengthen students' reading skills: comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary. Independent Reading is also called DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) or SSR (Self Sustained Silent Reading). But, no matter what you call it, Independent Reading should be part of the classroom schedule EVERY day. Often it is the first thing teachers drop from their schedule when additional time is needed, but that is not a good practice when you want students to grow in their reading skills. The 10 minute video gives more information about setting up and using Independent Reading in the classroom.
